Video definition of the word Definition

Here's another little video by my comedy partner Gemma Arrowsmith and me for wordia. Even more self referential than the last. Here it is (opens in a new window):

It's silly. Any other words you'd like us to do a video definition of? Let me know in the comments.

Interesting freecycle freebiejeebies scam and a dubious experiment

Interesting freecycle freebiejeebies scam and a dubious experiment

I love scams. They're often ingenious and involve a good bit of psychology. It's great fun figuring out how they work.

I saw an interesting misuse of freecycle recently which was a scam of sorts. I'll tell you how it worked then introduce my own dubious experiment. Continue reading →

Recursive video definition of the word recursion

As I've mentioned before, I'm a big fan of recursion. So when my comedy partner Gemma Arrowsmith showed me a website called Wordia we cooked up a plan to create a recursive video definition of the word recursion. The results are below (opens in a new page, you'll understand why I didn't want to embed it when you watch the video):

The Droste effect – image recursion

The Droste effect image recursion

I love recursion. There's something about the way it invokes infinity that makes my head spin. Droste effect images are recursive images that got their name from a Dutch company that makes chocolates and cocoa and things like that. Continue reading →

Shapes of constant width – coins from around the world

In a previous post I talked about shapes of constant width. I didn't know of any other coins beside the UK 50p and 20p that had the property of being the same width all the way round without being circular.

Well I was recently given this coin instead of 20p:

How 3D cinema works

I recently saw Avatar in 3D and 'forgot' to hand my glasses back in at the end. I thought I knew how this technology worked so I was very surprised when I started doing some experiments.

I saw Avatar at a Vue cinema that recently had 3D installed and the way it works is quite different to the IMAX. Continue reading →

Use Gmail filters to get only the facebook notifications you care about

Use Gmail filters to get only the facebook notifications you care about

If you're a member of a lot of groups or have a lot of pending invites they probably generate a fair few messages in your facebook inbox that you don't really care about. The messages you DO care about tend to be the ones from an individual to you. Those are the ones you want to be notified about by email and not the rest.

At the moment facebook doesn't give you the option to be notified about one type of message but not the other. That means your email inbox can quickly fill up with facebook notifications that don't interest you.

One answer is to use email filters and in this post I'll explain how to set that up.

A sketch about Mastermind

I write and perform sketches with my comedy partner Gamma Arrowsmith. They are often quite geeky. Here's an example:

And here's the Two Ronnies sketch that kicks its ass:

Burning paper with giant steel balls

Burning paper with giant steel balls

I bought these enormous ball bearings from this guy. They're fantastically heavy. When you whack them together you get a lovely sound. But for that brief moment and in that small space you also get really high temperatures and you can easily burn holes in paper. Here's a video:
